Draw of Contrade: who will run the Assumption Palio in Siena?
Valdimontone, Lupa, Bruco: here are the three districts that were chosen by lot last Sunday, July 8th which, together with Leocorno, Pantera, Civetta, Drago, Tartuca, Nicchio and Giraffa, they will take part in the Assumption Palio which will be held on August 16th.
The wait is over: the long-awaited three-light windows on the first floor of the Palazzo Pubblico of Siena have finally revealed the three populations kissed by luck that will be added to the seven districts that already run by right and can hope to win the second career of this 2018.
Fate plays a central role in the tradition of the Palio of Siena, and not only during the horses race. It is only ten out of seventeen contrade that take part in every career, on the basis of those who ran the same Palio last year.
Making a practical example: Leocorno, Pantera, Civetta, Drago, Tartuca, Nicchio and Giraffa they had not participated in the August 2017 race, therefore by right they will participate in the Palio in August 2018; to the seven Contrade provided then add three others, drawn by lot, which in this case were Valdimontone, Lupa, Bruco. There will be an interesting Palio, which sees the confrontation of two pairs of rivals: Civetta-Leocorno and Nicchio- Valdimontone. Among the ten is the Nicchio not to win for more time (1998) while there is the Drago who triumphed in the Palio of July 2, bringing the Palio at home.
And it is precisely on the occasion of the extractions of the Contrade that Piazza del Campo has also become a stage for the celebrations of the Contrada del Drago that, after the victory of the last Palio with Brio and Rocco Nice, have organized as tradition a massive procession.
